Campoformido

Campoformido (in local Italian dialect Campoformio), municipality and name of castle in the province of Udine (Italy). Place where on October 17, 1797 the peace treaty between Austria and France was concluded, putting an end to the War of the First Coalition. Austria had to cede the Netherlands (Belgium), Milan, Modena and Mantua and, in return, gained parts of the Republic of Venice (Venetia to the east of the Adige, Istria, Dalmatia). In a secret document Franz II gave his consent to the cession of the left bank of the Rhine, from Basel to Andernach, at the Congress of Rastatt.
