Burg, Baron Adam von, b. Vienna, Jan. 28, 1797, d. Vienna, Feb. 1, 1882, mathematician, technician, professor at the Vienna University of Technology. Rendered great service in the fields of water supply, fire fighting and gas-lighting in Vienna; introduced the metric system of measurements and weights and furthered the establishment of industry in Austria; 1879-1882 vice president of the Academy of Sciences. In 1798 his father Anton B. founded the first factory for agricultural machinery in Vienna.
