Vienna, Feb. 1, 1882, mathematician, technician, professor at the Vienna University of Technology. Rendered great service in the fields of water supply, fire fighting and gas-lighting in Vienna; introduced the metric system of measurements and weights and furthered the establishment of industry in Austria; 1879-1882 vice president of the Academy of Sciences. In 1798 his father Anton B. founded the first factory for agricultural machinery in Vienna. Literature: ÖBL.
