Brücke, Ernst Wilhelm vonBrücke, Ernst Wilhelm von, b. Berlin (Germany), June 6, 1819, d, Vienna, Jan. 7, 1892, physiologist, grandfather of Ernst Theodor von Brücke. After 1849 university professor in Vienna and head of the Institute of Physiology, one of the creators of modern phonetics, invented a phonetic alphabet; dealt with optics and the theory of colours.
