Braunkohle

Coal, Sub-bituminous (also lignite or brown coal) is mined in the Köflach-Voitsberg area (Styria) and until 1995 also in the Hausruck mountains (Upper Austria). Preparations to discontinue mining activities are currently being made in the Salzach coal basin, which used to be extremely important. Sub-bituminous coal is mainly used in thermal power plants and, to a much lesser extent, for heating in private households. In 1993, 1,682,069 t of sub-bituminous coal were mined in Austria.
