Binnenwanderung

Inland Migration: Migration within Austria as opposed to cross-border, international migration. Depending on the region in question, a distinction is made between inland migration crossing municipal borders, district borders or provincial borders. In the census of 1981, 1,4 million people said that they had changed domicile in the last 5 years: 611,000 had crossed a municipal border, 177,000 the border of a political district and 161,000 had moved to another province. Important migration trends are movements from Vienna to Lower Austria (suburbanization), to Vienna from Lower Austria, from Burgenland and from Styria and to the Western provinces from Carinthia and Styria.
