Bevölkerungsentwicklung

Population Development: Since 1869 (first Austrian census) the Austrian population has risen from 4.9 million to 7.8 million. The main reasons for this demographic development were the high rate of immigration to Vienna in the 19th and 20th centuries up until 1914 and again from the 1960s onwards, the high birth rate and increasing life expectancy. The birth rate decreased in the interwar period and has again been on the decline since the mid-1960s.
