BerufsstrukturEmployment Structure, the structure of the workforce according to a systematic directory of professions on the basis of censuses which is used for describing the social structure of a society. Of approximately 3.5 million economically active people in Austria (annual average 1990), 3.04 million are directly employed, with about 1.6 million (more than 50 per cent) being civil servants or "Angestellte" (employees). The remaining 1.4 million are manual workers. The proportion of self-employed is decreasing long-term, largely as a result of the decline in agriculture, while the proportion of those directly employed is growing. In this latter group, again, the number of blue-collar workers ("Arbeiter") is decreasing, while the number of "Angestellte" and civil servants is rising.
