Bernsteiner Gebirge

Bernstein Mountains, Burgenland, group of argillite mountains. They are part of the Central Alps massif and constitute the South-Eastern edge of the Bucklige Welt hills beginning at the border between Burgenland and Lower Austria. The wooded plateau between Zöbernbach and Tauchenbach reaches 896 m at the Hutwisch hill; the climate is rough, with massive precipitation and poor soil; the mountains and their Eastern continuation, the Güns mountains, separate Middle from Southern Burgenland. The only deposit of magnesium silicate in Europe is situated here. Near Tauchen, the largest deposit of brown coal in Europe can be found. Near Stuben and at Rettenbach, hot mineral springs have been discovered. Centre of the area: Bernstein.
