Vienna, June 18, 1931, mineralogist and petrographer, 1882-1890 university professor in Chernovtsy (Ukraine), then in Prague, from 1898 in Vienna; 1911-1929 Secretary-general of the Austrian Academy of Sciences; devised a system for classifying minerals according to their visual characteristics, gave his name to the "Becke´s Line".
