Basil, Otto (pseudonyms: Markus Hörmann, Camill Schmall), b. Vienna, Dec. 24, 1901, d. Vienna, Feb. 19, 1983, poet, novelist, feuilletonist and editor. 1923-1925 wrote for the magazines "Das Wort" and "Prager Abendblatt"; 1938 banned from writing. 1945-1948 editor of "Plan", an avant-garde magazine on literature and art (founded 1937). 1981 awarded the Austrian State Prize for Cultural Journalism.


Publications: Sternbild der Waage, 1945; Apokalypt. Vers, 1947; Monographs about G. Trakl (1965) and J. Nestroy (1967); Monographs on artists and poets such as E. A. Poe, K. Kraus, P. Altenberg, A. Loos, F. Werfel, 1968-1971; Wenn das der Führer wüßte, 1966 (novel); Lob und Tadel, 1981 (collection of theatre reviews).
