Axams, Tyrol, district of Innsbruck-Land, municipality, alt. 874 m, pop. 4,903 (1981: pop. 3676), area 22.2 km2, winter sports centre southwest of Innsbruck; tourism (185,931 overnight stays), especially since the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Games; Olympiaseilbahn cable railway, Elisabethinum (support centre for people with disabilities). - Performance of passion plays since 1683; parish church (rebuilt 1732/1734) with rich furnishings and ornamental stucco work; old farmsteads in the Upper Inntal Valley style; cemetery with subterranean St. Wilgefortis chapel (Kummernis, 1666); birthplace of K. Schönherr. A Celtic settlement was excavated in the neighbouring town of Birgitz.
