AugustusAugustus, b. Rome (Italy) (?), Sept. 23, 63 BC, d. Nola near Naples (Italy), Aug. 19, 14 A.D., first Roman Emperor. Original name Gaius Octavius; the Senate gave him the name "Augustus". His stepsons, Tiberius and Drusus the elder crossed the Alps annexing the Regnum Noricum (the area which is now Austria) and thus extended the frontier of the Roman Empire from Italy to the Danube. The title "Augustus" was subsequently adopted by all emperors, through the Middle Ages to the modern era.
