Ampferer, OttoAmpferer, Otto, b. Hötting near Innsbruck (Tyrol), Dec. 1, 1875, d. Innsbruck (Tyrol), July 9, 1947, geologist and alpinist. In his time famous mountaineer (first to ascend the Guglia di Brenta). 1935-1937 director of the Geologische Bundesanstalt (Federal Geological Institute); geological research and mapping of the Alps in the Tyrol and Vorarlberg. His theory of mountain-building by intrusion made him the forerunner to the modern theory of global mountain-building, namely plate tectonics. Literature: E. Thenius, O.
