Ampferer, Otto


Ampferer, Otto, b. Hötting near Innsbruck (Tyrol), Dec. 1, 1875, d. Innsbruck (Tyrol), July 9, 1947, geologist and alpinist. In his time famous mountaineer (first to ascend the Guglia di Brenta). 1935-1937 director of the Geologische Bundesanstalt (Federal Geological Institute); geological research and mapping of the Alps in the Tyrol and Vorarlberg. His theory of mountain-building by intrusion made him the forerunner to the modern theory of global mountain-building, namely plate tectonics.
