amnesty international Österreich


amnesty international Austria, Austrian branch of the human rights organisation of the same name (ai) founded in 1961, which is exclusively funded by private donations and devotes itself to the protection and support of victims of human rights violations and in particular political prisoners. ai has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace and enjoys consultative status with the UNO and Council of Europe. The work of ai Austria is supported by some 100 000 Austrians through donations and unpaid volunteer work. As of 1999 there were almost 1 000 unpaid workers in approx. 80 groups, not counting numerous activists participating in Urgent Action and Appeal networks as well as student and youth groups.
