Began studying medicine, but having gained public acclaim with her essay "Aufruf zum Mißtrauen" (in "Plan" 1946) suspended her studies in order to finish her autobiographical novel "Die größere Hoffnung" (1948). 1949/50 worked as a reader for a publishing company, from 1951 in the "Gruppe 47", where she met her future husband, the writer G. Eich (1907-1972). Renowned also for her radio plays. Mistrust of language and rejection of both normative as well as individual perceptions of reality are characteristic of her work. Several international literary awards, Grand Austrian State Prize 1995.
