8 symphonies of Schubert have come down to us, the first six are influenced by Haydn and Mozart. The 7th symphony (C major, 1828) was discovered by Robert Schumann (1838) at his brother Ferdinand's place. It is also called the 9th symphony. The 8th symphony in B minor, dating from 1822, is called "The Unfinished". It got its first hearing as late as 1865. Sketches for the 3rd movement, the Scherzo, have been found. The Gastein Symphony has been lost. It is dedicated to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society of Music Friends) in Vienna, which paid him an honorary remuneration of 100 Gulden (florins). The receipt of the score is entered in the archives of the Society. In his last two symphonies Schubert shows links with Beethoven, but he has already found the transition to the Romantic era: song-like themes, new ways of unfolding themes in the development, exhausting the powers of harmony in creating a mood, shifting between major and minor keys, the use of the horn as a melodic solo instrument, an individualistic, colourful use of instruments.
