The old musical society (Musikverein) under the Tuchlauben

On March 26th, 1828, the first anniversary of Beethoven’s death, Schubert’s only public concert took place in the auditorium of the Musikverein under the Tuchlauben (today Vienna, 1st district, Tuchlauben 12 - but the old building was demolished in 1885). It was organised at his friends’ suggestion, so as to alleviate his financial difficulties. The concert was a great artistic success, the net profit amounting to 800 florins. With it Schubert could settle his debts and buy a piano for himself. Eight months later he was already dead.
