The Glacis in front of St.Charles Borromeo church

© Historical Museum
of Vienna
Coloured lithography by Jakob Alt.

The picture shows the area in front of St.Charles’ church with the Glacis (open green space) as it was around 1820, the view is towards the inner city. To the right is the building which houses part of the Technical University (cf. "Österreich-Lexikon") today, to the left is the house where Schubert lodged in 1825 until summer 1826 (today Vienna 4th district, Technikerstraße 9). This is where he wrote the music to Goethe’s "Wilhelm Meister".
