Franz Schubert's spectacles

© Photo Archive Schilder

Since his boyhood Schubert wore glasses, which he often did not even take off during the night, as he was used to writing music immediately after waking up. Most of his portraits depict him with his spectacles, so this became a further distinctive mark to recognize him.
These spectacles are exhibited at the birthplace: a steel frame with round glasses, cracked in the middle. They were in the possession of Josef Hüttenbrenner, Anselm Hüttenbrenner's brother (cf. "Österreich-Lexikon").
