The journey to London |
On December 15th, 1790 Haydn left Vienna together with Johann Peter Salomon. He was 59 years old and had never been abroad before. His reply to the question whether he understood the English language was, "My language is understood by the whole world."
On the way to Calais he stopped at Munich, where he met Christian Cannabich, Kapellmeister to Prince Elector Charles Theodor. In Bonn, Salomon’s home town, he heard one of his own masses performed. On January 1st, 1791 he landed at Dover after a somewhat rough passage and reached London soon after.
Johann Christian Cannabich, born at Mannheim in 1731, died at Frankfurt/Main on January 20th, 1798, joined the Mannheim Court orchestra at the age of 13 and was a pupil of Johann Stamitz and Niccolo Jommelli at Rome. After his return he became Konzertmeister of the Mannheim orchestra. In 1778 he moved to Munich as director of instrumental music, together with Charles Theodor’s court. He wrote 91 symphonies and was one of the first composers to involve all instruments of the orchestra in the thematic structure of his works. In this respect he influenced W.A.Mozart.
