Stylistic position of the London symphonies |
In his last symphonies Haydn gave the classical type of symphony its final form. Richness of ideas, brilliant formal structure, careful elaboration of themes and mastery of technique characterise his scores. These symphonies occupy the same rank as Mozart’s achievements and simultaneously point the way towards Beethoven’s 1st symphony.
