Haydn: Surprise, 3rd movement

Form scheme
3rd movement
Elements taken from popular music form the 3rd movement.

bars 1-8
The melody of the minuet theme is based on the triads of G major and D major, tonic and dominant, which also explains the great melodic jumps. The influence of popular dances is unmistakable.

bars 8-18
The continuation of the theme starts with the minuet upbeat and proceeds step by step.

The further continuation begins with an ascending scale of eighth notes which closes this section. A closing subject turns into a theme. The orchestra as a whole takes up the minuet theme. The three-partite structure of the minuet part is complete. (Part A, Part B, Part A1).

bars 64-90
In the trio the head of the theme from part B of the minuet is inverted.
