Minuet, French, means originally small, tiny, a small-step dance, deriving from a folk dance. Under
Louis XIV it became a dance of the court and the high society. From France it spread all over Europe and was danced at every ball in the 18th and the early 19th century, particularly in Germany. In the
17th century the minuet was accepted into art music. In symphonies with 4 movements, Haydn and usually inserted the minuet as the third movement.
