| The ball at Prince Orlovsky’s palace
All the visitors enjoy themselves immensely on this evening, except for the Prince himself who - in spite of his wealth or just because of it - lives in constant boredom. Eisenstein is introduced as "Marquis Renard" and Chevalier Chagrin is no other than prison governor Frank. All the confusions arranged by Dr. Falke are successful. To his amazement Eisenstein meets his chambermaid Adele who denies her identity. He makes friends with the prison governor and falls in love with his own wife who is dressed up and masked as a Hungarian countess.
