Johann Strauß (Sohn) Operetta "Die Fledermaus": Place of action
Johann Strauß jun.

Johann Strauß states in his score: Locale - a spa in the neighbourhood of Vienna Although no direct mention is made, it is most likely that this spa is Baden, located south-east of Vienna.
Emperor Franz I (II) 1803-1834 had spent his summers in this town and thus raised Baden to an imperial summer residence. This turned Baden into a popular resort of the court and the upper classes of Vienna. The ensuing building spree has lastingly shaped the character of this Biedermeier town. It is a place where Marie Luise (wife to Napoleon I) used to live, but also many composers: Mozart, Schubert, Lanner, Strauß, Millöcker and Beethoven (who wrote parts of his 9th Symphony and of his Missa Solemnis here). At the end of the 19th century, the era of "Die Fledermaus", Baden was the upper-class spa of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
