Operetta "Die Fledermaus":
introductory remarks
Johann Strauß jun. |
In the operetta "Die Fledermaus" there occur situations which the spectator regards as amusing irony, as a comedy of errors or pretence.
-
The lover and opera singer Alfred is mistakenly arrested as the husband
-
Two men pretend to be French:
-
a) Gabriel von Eisenstein, a gentleman of private means, calls himself "Marquis Renard"
-
b) The prison governor Frank introduces himself as "Chevalier Chagrin". Both have no idea of French.
-
Rosalinde, Eisenstein’s wife, pretends to be a Hungarian countess, with whom her own husband, Gabriel v. Eisenstein is flirting
-
Adele, Rosalinde’s maid, turns up as an artist (in her mistress’s evening dress).
