An der
schönen blauen Donau: Vienna and the Danube
Johann Strauß jun. |
It was only shortly before the second millenium that Vienna really became a town located on the Danube. On August 23rd, 1979 Chancellor Dr.Bruno Kreisky ceremoniously handed over the so-called Vienna International Centre (Centre for International Conferences) to the then General Secretary of the UNO, the Austrian Kurt Waldheim.
On October 13th, 1987 a huge Danube regulation project was finished after 15 years of work. It created a Danube Island by means of embankments now used as a recreational centre. Vienna is no longer likely to be threatened by floods and with the UNO City the metropolis of Vienna is now really close to the Danube.
Was Vienna situated on the Danube during Johann Strauß jun.’s lifetime?
