An der
schönen blauen Donau: the name
Johann Strauß jun. |
Names for Strauß waltzes were often suggested by dedicatees or the organisers of a concert. The Danube Waltz got its name from the composer himself. It is quite possible that he knew a poem by the Hungarian poet Isidor Beck in which the phrase "beautiful blue Danube" occurs, without relating to Vienna but to Baja, the poet’s birthplace. Baja is situated on the „blue" Danube, in contrast to the neighbouring "fair" Tissova.
