1020 Vienna, Obere Donaustraße 95

The present IBM building stands on the spot where the Blue Danube Waltz was first played in public on February 15th, 1867. The house bears a commemorative plaque. In 1810 the so-called Diana Baths was built here. It contained a large indoor pool (36 x 12,5 m) which – when covered – provided a ballroom in winter whose structure guaranteed excellent acoustics. The reason why this ballroom was so widely used for concerts lay in the simple fact that Vienna did not offer any other facilities. The first hall that was purely intended for concerts was in the building of the “Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde” (Society of the Friends of Music) in 1010 Vienna, Tuchlauben 12. That was the predecessor of the present Musikvereinssaal, 1010 Vienna, Bösendorferstraße 12, the “Golden Hall” as it is known to the world through the annual New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
