Mozart

Jupiter Symphony, 2nd movement (Andante cantabile)

Form scheme
2nd movement
The 2nd movement is based on the sonata form (key: F major), although the structure is adapted to musical inspirations.

bars 1-11
The main theme of the 2nd movement radiates deep peace of mind. The strings have been told to play "con sordini", i.e. muted, which produces a darker timbre.

bars 19-27
The bridge with its descending triad fragmentations leads us into the world of C minor.

bars 28-34
The secondary theme in C major, gained from the first notes the C major scale, is very melodic and in its continuation is widened to a great melodic arc.

In the development Mozart only uses the theme of the bridge.

The recapitulation resumes the ideas of the exposition. The 10-bar main theme is reduced to the head of the theme, the bridge theme (the basis of the development) is left out, the secondary theme turns up in the root key F major.

A 10-bar Coda, beginning with the head of the main theme, concludes the movement in pianissimo.
