Haydn statue in the court of the birthplace

© Photo Archive Schilder
The memorial place wants to illustrate to the visitor not only the importance of the composer(s), but also their everyday lives. That is why the thatched roof of the old days has been restored.
Haydn’s ancestors came from the eastern part of Lower Austria. Kaspar Haydn, the greatgrandfather, lived as a casual worker in the old frontier fortress of Hainburg on the Danube, a town 7 km away. That was the birthplace of Matthias Haydn, the composer’s father, who moved to Rohrau as a young wheelwright.
