Rider Quartet, op.74, No.3: 2nd movement
Form scheme 2nd movement |
This 2nd movement is deeply emotional. It belongs to Joseph Haydn’s most beautiful quartet movements, the simplicity of its form can hardly be surpassed. The E-major key, not related to G minor, is intended as a kind of contrast. |
bars 1-10
In part A a theme in E major is presented. The rhythmic impulse is contained in the first 2 bars, repeated in bars 3 and 4 and extended into a 10-bar theme.
bars 23-30
The centre part, part B, is formed by a new theme; the rhythmic structure is derived from the 1st theme.
bars 38-47
In part A 1 the theme is transformed, it is a variation weaving around the basic notes; the main line of the theme remains clearly reconizable.
