Johann Georg Albrechtberger, 1736 - 1809
This Austrian composer and music theorist, born 1736 at Klosterneuburg and died in Vienna in 1809, was Court organist (since 1772) and choirmaster at St.Stephen’s (since 1792). Among others he was the teacher of Ludwig van Beethoven, Carl Czerny and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Albrechtsberger composed oratorios, masses, chamber music and piano pieces. He wrote a "Thorough instruction for composition" (1790) and a "Brief method to learn the general bass" (1792). Haydn showed Albrechtsberger parts of his oratorio "The Creation" as early as 1796. In 1806 Albrechtsberger, who was also a friend of Mozart’s, dedicated a canon to Haydn.
