Gottfried van Swieten, 1754 - 1803
Gerard van Swieten, Austrian doctor of medicine, of Dutch origin, became Maria Theresia’s adviser and court physician. By reforming Austrian medicine and the medical colleges he founded the "older Viennese medical school". His son chose a diplomatic career first. As Ambassador to Frederic II in Berlin he became interested in music. In 1777 Gottfried van Swieten became director of the Viennese Imperial Library. He organised concerts and sponsored musicians like Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. For the latter he wrote the librettos of the two oratorios "The Creation" and "The Seasons".
