Mozart Don Giovanni: Background
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

"Dramma giocoso" - a cheerful drama - is Da Ponte's definition of his work. It is a piece of classical literature that combines cheerful irony with profound and serious thought, a form of "cloak and dagger story", which uses confusions and disguising as dramatic devices. The name "dramma giocoso" makes us ponder which element - the tragic or the comic - is predominant.

Buffo characteristics are the two-act structure, great ensembles with big finales, the combination of noble and popular love intrigue. In Don Giovannis these ellments are connected in the hero's adventures. In his catalogue of works Mozart noted it as "opera buffa."
