Mozart Don Giovanni: General remarks
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni is called "the opera of all operas". With Don Giovanni the State Opera on the newly laid out Ringstraße was opened in May 25th, 1869.

The character of Don Giovanni, created by the Mercedarian monk Gabriel Tellez or Tirso de Molina, has not been used only in Mozart's opera but in about 460 other works. The comments on the subject are numerous, about 5000 books are trying to elucidate the subject. The question is what fascinates us in Don Giovanni, even is he is a wrong-doer, the murderer of an old man in his first scene, fails in the seduction of women and is finally plunged into hell. Maybe the listener does not identify with the reality on the stage but with a kind of dream of what the hero wanted to be - victorious, of course, something he cannot be - and so goes on dreaming.
