The basic mood flowing from this symphony is a sense of joy. Richard Wagner coined the famous phrase "apotheosis of dance", which he wrote down in a booklet "Art of the Future" in 1850.

First performance

It was first performd together with the battle symphony "Wellington’s Victory or The Battle of Vittoria", op.91, in the Hall of the University of Vienna.

The performing musicians of the orchestra contained such famous names as concert master Ignaz Schuppanzigh (cf. "Österreich-Lexikon"), Antonio Salieri (cf. "Österreich-Lexikon" ), Ludwig Spohr, Nepomuk Hummel (cf. "Österreich-Lexikon"), Ignaz Moscheles, Joseph Mayseder (cf. "Österreich-Lexikon") and Giacomo Meyerbeer.
