Brahms: Symphony No.2, 3rd movement

Form scheme
3rd movement
The Allegretto grazioso quasi Andantino is an original movement.

bars 1-22
The main theme, which also occurs in variations, is interrupted by 2 Presto sections.
The oboe starts with the dominant main theme, which is given a grace note on the 3rd quarter while the plucked celli are weaving around. The theme is developed from the second step, the introductory bar (basic unit) of the symphony.

After taking breath (fermate), the theme recurs in the woodwinds.

bars 33-50
In the Presto ma non assai the main theme is forced into a fast 2/4 time.

bars 51-75
The theme is continued by a new musical idea in dotted rhythm.

Part A 1 is built on the main theme in ¾ time, harmonically it is slightly modified.

bars 126-156
In fast-moving 3/8 time there is a second Presto insertion. A characteristic element of this part is the frequent stress on the second eighth note.

Part A 1: The theme of the G major movement is transposed to F-sharp major.

bars 219-225
Immediately before the Coda the oboe replays the abridged version of the main theme for a last time.

bars 225-240
A nostalgic call of the violins with a dying fall in the flutes gives the movement a pensive conclusion.
