In 1868 Buckner moved to Vienna for good, to keep up with his activities as University Professor. His first lodgings were on the 2nd floor of the house at Währinger Straße 41 (between 1868 and 1876). In this house he composed the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th symphonies, which the memorial plaque commemorates (affixed in 1961).
