History

This symphony was composed between September 1881 and September 1883. The first performance under Arthur Nikisch (cf. "Österreich-Lexikon") took place in the Theatre of Leipzig on December 30th, 1884. Nikisch had organised this concert in favour of a Wagner memorial fund. The press reaction was very positive. After another successful performance in Munich under the conductor Hermann Levi the symphony was dedicated to King Louis II of Bavaria. As early as 1886 the work was played in Chicago, New York and Boston. The first Viennese performance by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Hans Richter (cf. "Österreich-Lexikon") on March 21st, 1886 was successful, but also gave rise to the nasty comment, "Bruckner composes like a drunken man." It was this special symphony that made Bruckner world-famous.

Movements

1st movement: Allegro molto
2nd movement: Adagio (very solemn and very slow)
3rd movement: Scherzo (very fast)
4th movement: Finale (lively, but not too fast)
