As Anton Bruckner suffered from a severe walking disability in the last years of his life, Emperor Franz Joseph offered him lodgings in the gate-keeper's lodge of the Upper Belvedere so as to spare him the trouble of climbing stairs. This is where Bruckner lived from 1895 to his death in 1896.
