Form scheme 3rd movement

This Scherzo is short but designed colourfully and with creative imagination.

bars 1-20

The introductory motif is played by all strings in pianissimo, succeeded by the main motif in the trumpets; it is inspired by the crowing of a cock (= ki-ki-ri-ki).

bars 93-119

From the exposed motifs the musical process is developed in the centrepart of the Scherzo, using modifications, contrapuntal elaboration, mirroring and strettos.

bars 273-315

The trio theme in F major resonates the local music of Bruckner's native Upper Austria.
