Bruckner Bruckner's religious sense

What Bruckner expresses in his symphonic work is a strong feeling for nature, profoundly rooted in religious faith - something Goethe had in mind when he said that the miracle of life has to be comprehended in two ways: by exact searching reason and by faith. Bruckner unites both in his personality. In his symphonies the 1st and 4th movements reflect growth and perfection in the sense of the Divine. The central movements Adagio and Scherzo reflect the pain and joy of our earth. Beethoven's symphonies illustrate a Faustian struggle. Brahms meditates and concentrates on the inner realms of the soul. Within the frame of a theatrical all-encompassing work of art Wagner's music reflects a restless yearning for dissolution in the harmony of the spheres. Bruckner's symphonic art presents an innocent minstrel of God, one who praises creation in hymns. Such comparisons may be too generalising, but they contain elements helping us to understand basic parallels and differences.
