Beethoven

Symphony no.6: 5th movement (Allegro)
"Shepherds’ song; happy, thankful feelings after the storm"

Form scheme
5th movement
"Lord, we give you thanks" is written in a rough draft for this movement.

bars 9-24
The 5th movement leads us back into the contemplative, pastoral landscape. The head of the main theme consists of a fragmented F-major triad, first sounded in the 1st violins and repeated twice - in the 2nd violins and in the celli.

bars 31-39
The theme of the bridge gets its tension through its counter rhythm, the stress does not lie on the first beat.

bars 80-90
The main theme is taken up again at the beginning of the development. As a fragmentation of the motifs could contradict the pastoral character of the movement, Beethoven introduces a new theme, suitable to the general mood of the movement.

In the recapitulation the main theme is used in 3 different variations.

bars 211-236
The Coda of the movement consists of the main theme and broad triad fragmentations. A final hymn-like climax is achieved.

bars 236-264
The closing of the symphony leads us back to the gentle intimacy of the F-major triad in the main theme, intoned by the muted first horn.
