Schönberg's circumstances in 1947

The letter to Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt in which Schönberg announced the completion of the particell of "A Survivor from Warsaw" also contained a bitter remark: "I have to work hard here to make a living". In fact, in his circumstances, the fees for this commission were extremely important for Schönberg.
And yet, with this composition Schönberg also wrote a kind of creed which has few parallels in music history.
