Hauer's twelve-note notation
Hauer's twelve-note notation is based on the piano keys: the 8 lines correspond to the black keys 3 + 2 + 3 turned around by 90°. For example D lies between the 2 black keys C sharp and E flat, therefore it is notated in the space between the two lines.
