125th Birthday of Adolf Loos

Date of issue: January 13, 1995
Face value: AS 10
commemorative stamp

Adolf Loos, the great moralist in the evolution of European architecture, was born on December 10, 1870 in Brno, Moravia. Cafe "Nihilism" (Cafe Museum in Vienna) and the "Monster House" (Loos House on the Michael Square), originating in the years 1899 and 1910/11, respectively, were absolutely condemned by resentful contemporaries. The uncompromising Loos, relentlessly defending his convictions about life and architectural reform, always sought creative debate with his lesser progressive contemporaries. The gifted architect died in 1933 in Kalksburg, a suburb of Vienna.
