800th Anniversary of Wiener Neustadt
The city of Wiener Neustadt was first documented 800 years ago in the Book of Traditions by the Benedictine Monastery in Formbach on the Inn River. Wiener Neustadt's founding dates back to Leopold V, who, recognizing the threat to the Steinfeld from the hostile Eastern droves, decided to erect a stronghold in the middle of the plateau. One of the ministerial assemblies at Fischau in the year 1194 can be seen as the city's founding conference. The city's founder died shortly after this assembly, however, and so realization of this project was passed on to his younger son, Duke Leopold VI.
