Christmas 1993
Christmas was the subject of numerous Late Gothic paintings. Each painting's purpose was to spread the word of God in a way that was easily interpreted by all. The clear and simple composition of the painting at hand, "Birth of Christ", captivates the beholder through its folklore mode of expression. Unfortunately the painter remains unknown; however, from an artistic-geographic perspective, the painting probably originated somewhere in southern Styria. Fragments of the winged altar which remain leave behind recognizable hints that associate this painting with a series of similar ones hanging in the altar in Krainburg, all painted by the same artist or studio.
