Commemorative stamp

A painting by Pieter Bruegel from 1565 depicts a group of men taking part in the sport known as curling. This sport was already played in the 12th century by Duke Leopold V, and belongs to one of the oldest sports played in Middle Europe. The Austrian Curling Association was established on May 22, 1935. Curling is divided into three different forms of competition: team play and target and distance throwing. In 1983 the first World Championship in Curling took place in Frankfurt am Main. In 1987 it was held in Tyrol's Brixen Valley, where Austria's team demonstrated outstanding athletic performance. In 1990 the international World Championship in Curling was held in Vienna.
